Memory loss affects nearly 40% of people over age 65, with a smaller percentage (5-8%) experiencing dementia. It can be frustrating when there are few resources in a community for those navigating the symptoms and challenges. Three churches in rural Henry County, Tenn., decided to step in and help provide this support. Trinity United Methodist Church in cooperation with Bethesda UMC and Paris First UMC started “R.E.S.T.” after hearing input from the community and identifying connections in their congregations to local agencies and healthcare providers. The churches were able to start the program with the help of a 2024 Equipping the Local Church Grant. The program seeks to improve the quality of life for those living with dementia and those who care for them, through worship, arts & crafts, support groups, and a community where God’s abundant life can be experienced by all.
