Denman & Chappell Lectures

Brian McLaren, 2007 Wallace Chappell Lecture

Harry Denman Lectures

The Denman Lectures were established in 1968 to honor Dr. Harry Denman, a layman who headed the General Board of Evangelism in Nashville for nearly 25 years.  The lectures on evangelism are delivered every other year at the Congress on Evangelism.  The Foundation for Evangelism’s Board of Trustees makes the selection of the Denman Lecturer in consultation with the Council on Evangelism.  Previous Denman Lecturers include Albert Outler, Maxie Dunnam, Bishop Earl Hunt, Dr. Roberto Escamilla and Dr. James Logan.  Many of these lectures have been published and circulated to further the cause of evangelism.

Wallace Chappell Lectures

The Wallace Chappell Lecture is funded by an endowment gift from The Wallace Chappell Ministries, Inc., through The Foundation for Evangelism in honor of Wallace and Mary Frances Chappell. These lectures are delivered at United Methodist seminaries to enable the selected school to bring to its campus a national or world leader in Christian evangelism for a series of inspirational lectures.

The Wallace Chappell Lectureship offers a wonderful opportunity for exposure to leaders in Christian evangelism to those fortunate enough to attend. It serves as an excellent supplement to the regular program of instruction in evangelism that The Foundation provides and further encourages effective ministry in evangelism.

Wallace Chappell was an effective and distinguished preacher in the mid-20th century, who established a fund with The Foundation for Evangelism for an annual lecture to be given on evangelism. The first lecture was held at Emory University on April 4, 2002 and was delivered by Dr. James Buskirk, retired pastor of Tulsa First United Methodist Church.
