Dr. Kent Millard

Dr. Kent Millard has been selected as the 2007 Distinguished Evangelist of the United Methodist Church by The Foundation for Evangelism. The Distinguished Evangelist Award is given annually by The Foundation for Evangelism to a person who has been outstanding in the field of evangelism.

Dr. Kent Millard was appointed senior pastor of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church in Indianapolis, IN effective October 1, 1993, following a comprehensive search of all jurisdictions from coast to coast. He served several churches with distinction in South Dakota and was a District Superintendent in the South Dakota Conference. Dr. Millard earned a Doctor of Ministry degree from McCormic Theological Seminary and an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from Dakota Wesleyan University, his alma matter. He studied for one year at Cambridge University in England and has two master’s degrees from Boston University.

Dr. Jack Ewing, Executive Director of The Foundation for Evangelism made the presentation during the annual banquet of The Foundation held at Lake Junaluska, NC on November 2nd. In accepting the award, Dr. Millard talked about his life as a child growing in a dysfunctional family and how his life had been changed after accepting the Lord. He encouraged the crowd to “help seed the flame which will grow into fire so others will know the love of God.”

Dr. Millard states: “The vision of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church is to transform our society into a compassionate, inclusive and Christ-like community. We believe God has called us into being to make a positive, transforming difference in the world and that the heart of transformation is the transformation of the heart. The mission of St. Luke’s is to be an open community who gather to seek, celebrate, live and share the love of God for all creation. We describe ourselves as a passion-driven congregation in which we encourage each person to discover and develop their God-given passion for ministry and service to make a difference in the world.” Dr. Millard is the co-author of “The Passion Driven Congregation” with the previous Senior Pastor of St. Luke’s, Dr. Carver McGriff, a work which focuses on encouraging lay persons to follow their God-given passions for ministry.  He also authored the Lifesearch Series book entitled, “Spiritual Gifts”, in 1994 and the book ”Get Acquainted With Your Christian Faith”, 1996 both published by the United Methodist Publishing House.  He is the author of an article in the March, 2002 Net Results entitled“Challenging the Assumptions about Church Leadership”. Dr. Millard has been a delegate to two General Conference and six Jurisdictional Conferences of the United Methodist Church.

Dr. Millard has been the keynote speaker or workshop leader in six different annual conferences and has lead three two-year cycles of the Academy for Spiritual Formation sessions sponsored by the Upper Room of the United Methodist Church.

Dr. Millard and his wife, Minnietta have two children and seven grandchildren.  He enjoys spending his free time bicycling, canoeing, visiting with his grandchildren and in reflection.

The Foundation for Evangelism is an affiliate of the General Board of Discipleship of the United Methodist Church. It was founded in 1949, by the late Dr. Harry Denman, who served as the General Secretary of the Board of Evangelism of the Methodist Church. The mission of The Foundation is to promote, encourage, and provide resources for responsible evangelism, enabling the United Methodist Church to bring persons into a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and help them grow as His disciples.
