Anderson Named 2012 Distinguished Evangelist of The United Methodist Church

The Foundation for Evangelism announces Rev. Charles Anderson, Directing Pastor at University United Methodist Church in San Antonio, Texas, as the 2012 Distinguished Evangelist of The United Methodist Church. Rev. Anderson has served at University UMC since 2006, and during his time there has helped the congregation change its model of ministry to one that is intentional about putting measurable discipleship at the core of congregational life. This challenging approach has resulted in new ministries at the church, including U|Sk8, a “skate church” for those involved in San Antonio’s skateboarding culture. U|Sk8 has had 92 professions of faith to date. Several new evangelistic initiatives have been added to U|Ability, University’s outreach to adults with special needs. To date, U|Ability has had over 100 professions of faith through its Believer’s Garden worship and confirmation track for the developmentally disabled. On Memorial Day weekend 2010, University UMC undertook 50 Homes in 50 Hours onsite construction project, which engaged over 400 volunteers from the community to construct 70 portable habitats for Haiti.

During Rev. Anderson’s time at University UMC, the congregation has started two additional campuses. Anderson has a history of helping start new congregations, with involvement in four other new church starts and campus extensions prior to serving University UMC. His passion for new congregations began in 1985 when he served as a founding pastor of a new congregation that grew to over 1,200 members in five years.

Rev. Anderson is a graduate of Baylor University and earned his Master of Divinity at Candler School of Theology at Emory University. He served in the New Life Mission and Key Event evangelism programs of the General Board of Discipleship. He serves on the steering committee for the Large Church Initiative of the UMC, and was the host pastor for LCI 2010.

Rev. Charles Anderson is married to Lydia, and they have two daughters – Lindsay (25) and Katie (22).

The Distinguished Evangelist of The United Methodist Church Award is presented annually by The Foundation for Evangelism to an individual whose personal ministry in evangelism has been recognized throughout the United Methodist denomination. Founded in 1949 by the late Dr. Harry Denman, the Foundation provides grants for Doctoral Education, Leadership Development, and Leadership Enrichment.
